Getting acquainted with Dr. Victoria Wheeler, a compassionate Austin OBGYN
Growing up in a family of physicians in the heart of the Mississippi Delta, Dr. Victoria Wheeler learned the value of giving back to her community. Through her work with local women, she developed excellent communication skills, learning to talk to women about even the most sensitive subjects. She says, “I learned to talk to teens and women of all ages about sexual education and other sensitive subjects like being overweight and healthy diet.” She brings her compassion and ability to discuss confidential topics to patient care as an Austin OBGYN.
Victoria Wheeler MD has an impressive educational background
Dr. Victoria Wheeler received her bachelor’s degree in English literature, graduating with honors from Millsaps College in Jackson, MS. She chose the University of Mississippi Medical Center for her medical training. She was a finalist for the Surgical Scholars Program, a competitive clerkship that helped her gain research and clinical surgical experience.
Victoria Wheeler MD completed her OBGYN residency training at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. People from surrounding states, including the Florida Panhandle, Tennessee, Georgia and Mississippi, come to this major academic referral center for care.
Dr. Wheeler has many interests and talents
Dr. Wheeler loved to read and write, so even though she knew she wanted to go into medicine, she chose to major in English literature as an undergraduate. She believes that the skills she acquired during her college years translated into skills she used in medical school, residency and practice.
According to Dr. Wheeler, “As an English major, I learned critical thinking and honed my communication and research skills.” At her medical school graduation, officiants shared her essay “The Outlier You Want to Keep,” and the work became required reading for incoming medical school classes.
In addition to reading and writing, Dr. Victoria Wheeler enjoys traveling to other countries, taking spin classes, going to concerts and exploring Austin with her dog, Simba.
