Adolescent Gynecology

Adolescent gynecology visits begin a lifetime of women’s healthcare

Adolescent gynecology focuses on caring for young women as they mature into adults. Our Austin, Bastrop, Cedar Park and Round Rock OBGYNs suggest that young women first visit the gynecologist between the ages of 13 and 15. This is the ideal age because most young women begin to menstruate between the ages of 12 and 14. Our OBGYNs recommendation follows advice from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG).

Why is adolescent gynecology important?

Some people think gynecology is only for young women who have health issues. However, it’s for all young women. Our OBGYNs cover three important areas during each visit.

Questions and answers. We’re here to answer questions about your body and the changes you experience. We’ll also discuss your emotional life, social life and sexuality in a supportive and compassionate manner.

Prevention. During an adolescent gynecology visit, we may discuss sexually transmitted infections (STIs), recreational drug use and maintaining a healthy weight.

Treatment for health issues. We can treat any problems that may arise, such as period issues, vaginal infections and ovarian cysts.

Getting to know you during your visit

An important part of adolescent gynecology is establishing a relationship between you and your OBGYN. We need to have an open, honest discussion about many sensitive issues, and trust builds the foundation for open communication.

Sexual health is just one of the areas you’ll discuss with your OBGYN. Whether you’re already sexually active or just curious, we’re open to any and all questions. We’ll also ask you a few things during your appointment to help you protect your health and future fertility.

  • Whether you have had any type of sexual activity, including vaginal, anal or oral
  • Whether you have had unprotected sex or have had multiple partners

Because we care about your health as a whole, we’ll also discuss your mental health. It’s important to talk with us about problems you are encountering in your daily life.

  • Body image issues
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Bullying
  • Dating violence
  • Addiction
