Minimally invasive surgery is beneficial for patients.
Our Austin ObGyns are trained to perform minimally invasive surgery, a technique that can be used for most procedures today. Unlike traditional, open surgery, which requires a large abdominal incision, minimally invasive surgery requires only a few small incisions. In other minimally invasive gynecological surgeries, we can operate using a vaginal approach, eliminating incisions altogether.
Minimally invasive surgery allows our physicians to use specialized surgical tools, inserted abdominally or vaginally, to view the surgical field and perform procedures.
Benefits of minimally invasive surgery
Women have access to many benefits when they opt for minimally invasive surgery rather than traditional, open surgery.
- Faster recovery time
- Less bleeding, pain and scarring
- Lowered risk of infections
- Fewer complications
In addition, we can usually perform minimally invasive surgery on an outpatient basis. Even when hospitalization is required, the hospital stay is shorter than with traditional surgery.
Our Austin ObGyns perform several types of minimally invasive procedures
There are several types of minimally invasive procedures to address many different problems, including endometriosis, uterine polyps, fibroids, pelvic pain, pelvic organ prolapse, endometriosis and more. Here is an explanation of the three primary types of minimally invasive surgeries we perform.
Laparoscopy — Laparoscopy allows our Austin ObGyns to view and perform surgery on the pelvic organs and structures. The surgeon makes two or three small incisions in the abdomen and inserts a long, thin instrument with a camera and a light on the end to view the internal structures. She also inserts small surgical instruments endoscopically. Hysterectomies and endometriosis surgeries are performed using this procedure.
Hysteroscopy — This minimally invasive surgery requires no external incisions because the instruments are inserted into the uterus vaginally via the cervix. Our Austin ObGyns insert a hysteroscope, a thin, lighted tube with a camera attached, into the vagina, which allows them to view the surgical area. They also insert surgical instruments vaginally.
Robotic surgery — Robotic surgery is a special type of laparoscopy and is performed by a surgeon using the da Vinci® Surgical System. Your surgeon performs the surgery sitting behind the console of the machine, which provides her with a three-dimensional view of the surgical field. While she looks through the console, she inserts and manipulates the surgical instruments, remotely controlling the “arms” of the surgical system as if they were her own. The advantages of robotic surgery include more precision, mobility and better visualization.
Our Austin ObGyns also employ minimally invasive techniques for diagnosis
Minimally invasive techniques have long replaced the open “exploratory surgeries” of the past. Now, our surgeons can use minimally invasive techniques to diagnose many conditions, including endometriosis, ovarian cysts, polyps, fibroids, pelvic organ prolapse, pelvic pain and more.
Our trained and experienced surgeons both diagnose and treat women’s conditions with state-of-the-art minimally invasive surgery. Contact us today to get help with your gynecological problems.
