Here are a few examples that explain why making good daily choices is an essential part of optimizing a woman’s wellbeing.

Good nutrition is one of the building blocks of women’s wellness

Proper nutrition contributes to women’s wellness by providing essential nutrients, vitamins, and minerals. A healthy diet should include several food groups:

  • Whole grains provide fiber.
  • Fruits and vegetables contain vitamins and fiber.
  • Lean protein builds and repairs muscles and tissues.
  • Dairy, dark greens, enriched cereal and juice, some soy products and certain seafood provide calcium.
  • Healthy fats, especially from plant oil, promote brain development and blood clotting.

During their reproductive years, women should also take a daily supplement that provides 400 mcg of folic acid.

Women’s wellness is also about reaching and maintaining an optimal weight. Women who have a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher, have a higher risk of several health issues, including heart disease, diabetes, arthritis and fertility problems.

The Office on Women’s Health recommends that women perform moderate exercise for 150 minutes, or two and a half hours, per week. Moderate exercise includes activities like walking, biking, and swimming. Strength training at least two days per week also benefits women’s wellness.
